A thank you letter from Hannah's Dad - 17 October 2009
|
|
Hi Kevin and Paul
Attached are some images of Hannah’s first outing on the trike
Took some setting up and I’m sure Hannah’s physio may yet make a
few amends on seat height etc. There are SO many different ways to alter
everything! Her leg callipers have also still to be attached
She enjoyed it immensely and even managed some pedalling
herself. I think little sister Katy also needs to get a bike/trike now and
they can chase each other
Hope to meet up with you soon to officially say thank-you
Best regards

We would really like to thank Pidley Mountain Rescue
for lending our son, Alexander, a fantastic bike. The Kitten is a low gear
ratio tricycle which can be pedalled forwards AND backwards WOW, and with a
little carrying bag on the back it really offered lots of street credibility
:)
This was indeed a rescue as we had run out of ideas
on how to provide our son with a bike which would allow him to zoom around
on his bike just like his friends and neighbours. Alexander has low muscle
tone from having bilateral clubfeet and Ehlers Danlos type III which is a
connective tissue disorder. This essentially means he is really stretchy
and his ligaments don't do the job they ought. Just to ensure we parents
are kept on our toes, Alexander also suffers from Perthes, this is where the
blood supply is lost to the hip joint causing it to waste. Fortunately he
is little and with luck the new bone growth these joints are seeing will
mean he will soon be able to put this aspect behind him. |

We had tried a handcycle but alas this put a lot of strain on Alexander's
hands and they became severely hypermobile as a result. The low gear ratio
of the Kitten is great as on the days when either the pain from the Perthes
has been too great or simply tiredness from the EDS have meant he had not
got much stamina, he was still able to go out and have some independence and
also get some exercise. The trouble with the EDS is that each time the
person grows, they outstip the strength in their muscles so the muscles then
have to be retrained. The low gear ratio bike has been a gift from heaven.
The bag helped lots as it was easy to encourage Alexander to go out on
really bad days as I would give
him the responsibility of carrying a parcel for the
Post Office :)
Thanks, we now know where to start in terms of
looking for the next bike, now we have moved to California.
We simply cannot thank you enough
